Bridgwater Town Council has responded to issues surrounding the sale and welfare of animals at this year's Bridgwater Fair.

These concerns have emerged due to reports shared by attendees following the event.

Bridgwater Fair is an historic event, with its traditions rooted deeply in community history, including the participation of animals.

However, this year there have been unprecedented concerns regarding animals other than horses being offered for sale.

While the Fair is organised by Bridgwater Town Council, the Council does not oversee the private transactions concerning animal sales that occur during the event.

Members of the Gypsy, Roma and Traveller community traditionally attend and have contributed to the Fair’s animal trading activities.

Bridgwater Town Council acknowledges the importance of maintaining proper animal welfare standards and has committed to reviewing their arrangements for animals at the Fair.

They plan to work with Somerset Council, Avon and Somerset Police, and the RSPCA to better understand the situation and explore improvements for future events.

A statement from the local authority confirmed: "The Council would also encourage members of the public who have concerns about animal welfare at future events to report them to the police and the RSPCA rather than attempting to intervene by purchasing or removing animals themselves.

"While such actions are often well-intentioned, they may inadvertently encourage further trading and make it harder for the appropriate authorities to investigate concerns. Prompt reporting helps ensure that any welfare issues can be addressed appropriately and will also help inform the Council's ongoing review of arrangements for future Fairs.

"Our aim is to ensure that the Fair remains a safe, respectful and enjoyable event for everyone, while preserving an important local tradition.

"We remain committed to working with partners and stakeholders to support the continued success of Bridgwater Fair for future generations."
