Somerset residents have the opportunity to contribute their views on proposed changes to the Council Tax Reduction (CTR) scheme for working age adults with low incomes.

The Council has initiated a consultation process to review the existing scheme and consider how it can be enhanced to better support the most vulnerable.

Currently, CTR offers a discount to Council Tax payers with low incomes, but any proposed adjustments will only affect working age adults, leaving support for pensioners unchanged.

In December 2025, the Council agreed to its scheme for 2026/27 while also committing to a comprehensive review of support recipients and the extent of assistance.

The Council's latest consultation is focused on the 2027/28 scheme, with proposals aiming to redistribute support to optimise aid for those in greatest need without increasing the overall cost of the programme.

Cllr Bill Revans, Leader of Somerset Council, emphasised the importance of public input, stating:

"We know that Council Tax Reduction provides important support to many households across Somerset, so it is vital that we hear from the people who may be affected by any future changes.

"No decisions have been made, and this consultation is an opportunity for residents to tell us what they think about the proposals. Their feedback will play an important role in helping councillors understand the potential impact of the changes and shape the final scheme.

"I would encourage anyone with an interest in the future of Council Tax Reduction in Somerset to take a few minutes to have their say."

The consultation, which began on 7th July, will remain open until 28th September 2026. Feedback submitted during this period will be reviewed before councillors make any decisions later in the year. Should the changes be approved, they would be implemented from 1st April 2027.

Residents interested in participating and accessing complete details about the proposals can visit the Council’s consultation page.
