Collapsed Croscombe wall to be repaired
A short section of the A371 will be temporarily closed from next week

A short section of the A371, near Croscombe, will be partially closed from Monday 7 September, by Somerset Council, to allow vital repair work to be carried out.
Part of a stone boundary wall, between the road and the River Sheppey, has collapsed, after a road traffic collision.
The road will operate under temporary two-way traffic lights, for around three weeks, to allow the damaged section of wall to be rebuilt.
The work will include removing the collapsed section of wall from the river and embankment and storing it on the footway and highway, before it is re-used in the reconstruction of the wall.
The partial closure of the road is needed, to allow contractors to work safely and store essential materials. It also has to be done during drier weather, because the affected road is so close to the waterway.
The two-way lights will be manually operated, from 7am to 6.30pm.
Somerset Council’s Lead Member for Highways and Transport, Councillor Richard Wilkins, said: “It’s vital that the work is done soon before the onset of autumn and potential persistent rain.
“Decisions to close part of a road are not taken lightly. In this case it’s a very restricted site due to the proximity of the river.
“We appreciate the inconvenience for road users and thank them in advance for their patience and understanding while this section of wall is repaired and made safe.”
