Most drivers in Bridgwater are sticking to speed limits, according to new monitoring on several local roads.

Bridgwater Council carries out traffic speed and volume monitoring between August and December and found average speeds were usually well within the limit, especially in residential areas, though there were a few isolated cases of drivers going much faster.

The data was collected from Speed Indicator Devices (SIDs) installed at various locations across the town.

Across the monitored locations, average speeds generally ranged from around 18mph on quieter residential streets to approximately 29mph on busier thoroughfares.

The highest speed recorded was 89 miles an hour late at night on Bristol Road.

Cllr Tim Mander for Bridgwater Town Councils Transport Forum said:

“It’s reassuring to see that most drivers in Bridgwater are respecting speed limits, especially in residential areas where safety is paramount.

“This data helps us identify where further action may be needed and supports our commitment to keeping our roads safe for everyone.”

The council says overall, the programme shows that drivers in the town generally respect local speed limits, particularly on residential streets where compliance often exceeds 95%.
