The A361 on the Somerset Levels has reopened after it was forced to close due to severe flooding.

The road was initially shut on 25th January after persistent rain and rising water levels inundated the area.

The situation worsened with the arrival of Storm Chandra, with further flooding leading to the declaration of a Major Incident on 27th January.

Somerset Council say the A361 is now clear of flood water and after an assessment and debris clearance the road was reopened today (February 19th).

As of yesterday (February 18th), Somerset's flooding is no longer being treated as a Major Incident and has entered the recovery phase.

During the last three weeks the Environment Agency deployed additional pumps at 19 locations across the Somerset Levels and Moors, aiming to lower water levels and safeguard homes.

Councillor Richard Wilkins, Somerset Council’s Lead Member for Transport and Waste Services said: “This is a vital route and we are really pleased to be able to reopen it today.

“We understand the urgency for local people, businesses and road users, but we have to ensure the road is safe and completely clear of debris. We are grateful for everyone’s patience.

“We will continue to work closely with the EA over the coming days to monitor the situation, we have had an unprecedented start to 2026 in terms of rain and we can expect further wet weather in the coming weeks on ground that is already saturated. “That means we have to be prepared to act swiftly to reclose the road if necessary.”

Several roads in the Somerset remain shut, including Cutts Road, Langport Road, and New Road on the Levels.
