Urgent repairs planned for historic Yelde Hall in Wiltshire
Damp and drainage issues could cause further damage to Chippenham landmark
Emergency repairs are being planned for Yelde Hall, a Grade I-listed building situated in Market Place in Chippenham.
The iconic structure, built in the early 15th century, is experiencing rising damp and algae growth across its façades, with moss also covering its roof.
Architects have submitted a listed building consent application proposing a new cast-iron rainwater system, alongside other measures, to prevent further damage.
The proposed works include installing gutters and downpipes that match the existing appearance, clearing blocked gullies, removing moss, and repairing damaged stonework and roof tiles.
An inspection revealed poorly aligned guttering and defective joints leading to water ingress, as well as blocked downpipes and gullies congested with leaves.
The north elevation lacks guttering, causing water damage, and significant vegetation growth was found within a parapet gutter.
The architects emphasised the necessity of these repairs to maintain the integrity of the historic materials, considering that ongoing maintenance due to excessive water ingress is unsustainable.
Alongside this application, separate plans to improve the public space surrounding Yelde Hall are underway to enhance Chippenham town centre.
Yelde Hall has played numerous public roles throughout centuries, such as serving as a guildhall, armoury, fire station, and museum.
