Women's club in Salisbury marks 5th birthday
Salisbury Soroptimist's help women in the city and across the world
A club Salisbury supporting women both locally and internationally has marked it's fifth birthday with a brunch gathering.
Salisbury Soroptimists celebrated the special day at the Legacy Rose and Crown in Harnham with members both past and present in attendance.
A birthday cake was cut by member Ruth Healy and a small raffle raised £119 for the Diamond Education Grant, which awards money to help women update their skills to improve employment opportunities.
Since launching in 2019, the charity's 97 projects has helped women across the world.
Their annual bra collection has sent over 13,000 bra's to women in Africa while quiz nights have generated £5,500 for Salisbury Women's Refuge and EdUKaid.
The organisation also supported the 'Her Salisbury Story' project, which published the tales of 85 women from the city online - inspiring an exhibition at Salisbury Museum and creating a map/walking trail around the city called 'Her Salisbury Footprint'.
They were also partly responsible for two new Blue Plaque in the city for women - those of Frances Hale, who's company built a number of our Victorian buildings, and Dr Marina Seabright, famed for her work with genetics.
Each year, the club participates in the UN's 'Orange the World' campaign with the aim of eradicating violence against women and girls.
“We now have 35 members” said Club President Michele Smith, “and are happy to welcome any women who are interested in making the world a better place for women and girls.”
She added: “There are so many ways in which women can help each other, at the same time making new friendships and having fun.”
