A 51-year-old woman has been banned from driving for a year after hitting a cyclist and leaving the scene of the accident on the B4508 near Highworth last December.

Lucy Elango, from Church View, Highworth, admitted to careless driving causing serious injury and failing to remain at the scene following the collision on 6th December 2025.

The incident occurred as Elango attempted to overtake the cyclist between Watchfield and Highworth but struck the bicycle from behind, causing the rider to be thrown onto a grass verge, according to evidence presented at Swindon Magistrates’ Court.

Elango paused at the scene while others administered first aid to the 53-year-old cyclist, only to drive off without providing any information.

Authorities eventually identified her through public appeals for information.

On Wednesday, Elango was disqualified from driving for 12 months, fined £200, and required to pay £85 in court costs and an £80 surcharge.

In court, the injured cyclist shared the lasting impact of the accident, expressing the difficulty of coming to terms with being left at the roadside and how it has altered his life as a fitness enthusiast.

Roads policing officer PC Paul Davis highlighted the grave consequences of Elango's lack of attention and her decision to leave the scene, stating they compounded the seriousness of her careless driving.
