A woman in her 70s has died after a serious crash near Royal Wootton Bassett yesterday evening (30 June).

Police were called to a head on collision between an orange Peugeot 107 travelling northbound and a black Vauxhall Astra travelling southbound on the B4696 between Brinkworth Road and Lydiard Plain at around 6:05pm.

The driver of the Peugeot, a woman in her 70s, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police say her next of kin have been informed.

The driver of the Vauxhall, a man aged 43, has been arrested on suspicion of death by dangerous driving and causing death by driving while unfit through drink or drugs.

Police say he has been taken to hospital to be treated for serious injuries and will then be questioned in connection with the incident.

A passenger in the Vauxhall, a teenage girl, was also injured and taken to hospital.

The road was closed while enquiries took place but has now reopened.

Wiltshire Police say they have made a mandatory referral to the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) due to previous involvement with the suspect.

Officers are appealing for any witnesses or anyone who might have dash cam footage to contact them.
