Wiltshire schools to pilot safer streets initiative from September 2026
Pilot aims to create safer environments for schoolchildren
Wiltshire Council will launch its School Streets pilot at four schools across the county from 4th September 2026, aiming to enhance safety and reduce congestion during busy school run times.
The schools involved include Aloeric Primary School in Melksham, Fynamore Primary School in Calne, Minster Primary School in Warminster, and Queen's Crescent Primary School in Chippenham.
These schools volunteered to participate in the pilot following a consultation process involving residents, businesses, school families, and staff.
School Streets temporarily restrict traffic on roads outside schools at the start and end of the school day during term time, promoting walking, wheeling, and cycling.
The pilot will run under Experimental Traffic Regulation Orders (ETROs), allowing real-world testing while gathering feedback from the community.
Residents, parents, schools, and businesses will have 18 months to share their views before deciding on the permanence of the schemes.
Traffic restrictions will apply only during specific periods at the start and end of each school day, enforced by automatic number plate recognition cameras.
Emergency services, residents, businesses within the restricted areas, and individuals with defined needs will be exempt.
Cllr Martin Smith, Cabinet Member for Highways, said: “School Streets are about creating safer, calmer environments for children and families at the busiest times of the school day."
The initiative is part of a broader effort to promote safer roads and encourage sustainable transportation methods in line with Our Wiltshire Plan.
Residents and stakeholders are invited to experience the changes and provide feedback to inform future decisions.
People eligible for exemption permits, including residents in a School Streets zone, businesses, employees, and individuals with medical needs, can apply to ensure uninterrupted travel during restricted times.
School transport will be coordinated by the schools, and emergency services vehicles will remain exempt.
