A beloved Wiltshire pub that was rescued by local residents is set to become a vibrant part of the community once it reopens.

The Ivy at Heddington has had it's renovation plans approved by Wiltshire Council's and when it's doors open will bring new social and employment opportunities to villagers.

The campaign to save the Grade II-listed, 17th-century pub has reached a pivotal moment, with plans for two single-storey rear extensions, upgraded toilet facilities featuring an accessible WC, a new beer cellar, and expanded kitchen space.

Modifications to the existing kitchen include a pitched slate roof and enhanced accessibility via a new ramp, while additional changes involve preparing a log burner in the fireplace, installing a building drainage margin, and repairing existing windows.

Richard Ring, Chair of the Friends of the Ivy group, who bought the pub, emphasized the overwhelming support from villagers who've donated time, skills, and resources to the project.

"We've had a huge amount of support from villagers and that's not just from volunteers but also from people who've given their time, skills, and products for free," Richard said.

Reflecting on the project's broader impact, he noted how the initiative has brought the village together.

"The project of bringing the pub and the cafe to life has actually brought the village together. We had 13 volunteers on site last weekend, helping out."

The vision for The Ivy extends beyond its pub roots; it’s set to become a cafe and community meeting place, providing local employment opportunities and sourcing products locally, including Wiltshire beers.

Richard said: "About 400 of us live in the village, and felt that it was really important to preserve the pub and extend it not just from being a pub, but being a café and a place where the whole community can meet together.

"It's a place for people to meet. people to converse, a place where we can help combat social isolation."

With plans now approved, the project can advance from repairs to full construction, with reopening anticipated by 2027.
