Wiltshire Police has launched an internal campaign aimed at tackling sexual misconduct in the workplace disguised as jokes or so-called banter.
The force says its “It’s Not Banter” campaign is designed to help staff recognise when comments and behaviour cross the line, while encouraging them to challenge concerns and report them.
An internal survey found 13 per cent of male staff and nine per cent of female staff said they hear a sexual joke or story at least once a week.
It also found some staff who had experienced or witnessed sexual misconduct chose not to report it. Seventeen per cent said they feared it could affect their career, while 23 per cent were worried about being excluded by colleagues.
Wiltshire Police says the campaign will also raise awareness of Op Access, its reporting service for employees concerned about sexual misconduct.
Deputy Chief Constable Mark Cooper said behaviour which leaves colleagues feeling uncomfortable, undermined or disrespected has “no place” in the force.
He said Wiltshire Police was committed to challenging misogyny, misandry and other inappropriate behaviour, whether it is obvious or presented as humour.
