Wiltshire Council has refused to abandon its plans for a £303 million bypass around Melksham, despite the Government removing the project from its roads funding programme.

The Department for Transport concluded in a review that the A350 Melksham bypass offered lower overall value for money compared to other projects in the programme.

The Council expressed disappointment at the decision but remains hopeful about future opportunities to secure funding for the project.

Chief executive Lucy Townsend said: “The A350 is a strategically important route for Wiltshire and beyond, and we know many residents, businesses and stakeholders have long supported improvements to address congestion and other transport challenges in and around Melksham.

“While the Government has decided not to take this scheme forward through the current funding programme, this does not prevent it from being considered again in the future should a suitable funding opportunity arise.”

Councillors have reacted strongly to the Government's decision.

Melksham South Councillor Jon Hubbard (Independent) criticised the removal of funds for a road previously labeled "sub-standard" by the Government. Melksham Forest Councillor Jennie Westbrook (Liberal Democrat) expressed frustration over traffic issues, while Bowerhill Councillor Nick Holder (Conservative) acknowledged the decision as unsurprising.

Devizes Rural West Councillor Tamara Reay (Conservative) noted that while some residents welcome the decision, Wiltshire continues to face significant transport challenges.

Wiltshire Council say they remain dedicated to considering the bypass again when new funding opportunities arise, aiming to improve congestion, journey times, road safety, and environmental impacts.
