As winter is approaching, people across Wiltshire are being encouraged to get ready for potential floods due to increased rainfall and storms.

The council are reminding people that acting before the bad weather arrives will give them more time to prepare and help minimise the damage.

David Bullock, the Wiltshire Council Director of Highways, said: “Knowing your flood risk, signing up for flood warnings and having a plan in place can make a real difference should flooding occur."

People should check their risk from rivers and standing water.

Flood plans should be made in advance and include emergency contacts, a kit of essentials and evacuation routes.

Other advice includes enabling Met Office weather alerts on phones, moving valuables upstairs when flooding is likely and investing in protection for your property such as flood gates or barriers, if you live in a high-risk area.

Residents are also being encouraged to report any potential issues like standing water on roads or blocked gullies.
