Council wants to fly Pride flag outside HQ for five years
The flag would be flown every pride month until 2030 if proposals are approved
Plans to fly the Pride Progress flag outside the headquarters of Wiltshire Council for five years have been revealed.
If the council grants itself planning permission, it will be able to fly the Progress Pride flag outside County Hall in Trowbridge between 1 and 30 June – Pride month – every year for the next five years.
The council has also submitted plans to fly an identical 2.6 metre (8.5ft) wide flag outside its offices at Monkton Park, Chippenham.
The council has had to apply for advertising consent because the flags are not ones that are automatically permitted under current legislation.
Examples of permitted flags include the Union Flag, the St George’s Cross, and the Wiltshire flag.
The Pride flag is also permitted, but not the Progress Pride flag, which adds a chevron of colours to the traditional rainbow stripe design to include people of colour, trans and intersex communities, and those affected by HIV/AIDS.
In October, Liberal Democrats at Wiltshire Council put forward a motion that would have affirmed Wiltshire Council’s support for LGBTQIA+ residents.
However, the motion was amended by Conservatives – backed by Reform UK – to remove all references to LGBTQIA+ individuals, adopting a broader statement of supporting “all people equally.”
