Women across Wiltshire are being urged to book life-saving cervical screening.

Often known as a smear test, helps identify high-risk HPV (Human Papillomavirus) and any changes in cervical cells that could develop into cancer if not treated promptly.

Despite the life-saving potential of early detection, many people postpone or avoid booking their appointment.

Becky Park, an NHS nurse working in Wiltshire, explains the importance of timely cervical screening: "We know life gets busy and it's easy to put things off, but if you've missed your cervical screening invite, now is the perfect time to take action. Every screening matters and yours could save your life," Park said.

Wiltshire Council's Initiative

Cllr Clare Cape, Wiltshire Council Cabinet Member for Public Health and NHS Co-ordination, supports the initiative, emphasising the lifesaving impact of cervical screening. "Cervical screening saves lives, and I would encourage everyone eligible for screening in Wiltshire to attend their appointment," Cape said.

She added, "Screening is one of the best ways to help prevent cervical cancer. We know some people may feel anxious or put it off for different reasons, so our new video has been created to help answer questions, reassure residents about the process, and support more women to feel confident about booking their test. If you've received an invitation, or missed your last appointment, please contact your GP practice as soon as possible."

The Importance of Screening

Approximately 3,000 cases of cervical cancer are diagnosed in the UK annually. Regular screening and HPV vaccinations are vital measures in reducing these numbers, with cervical screening estimated to save 4,500 lives each year in the UK.

Women and people with a cervix aged 25 to 64 are eligible for cervical screening through the NHS programme. Those who have missed a previous appointment can still book one at any time through their GP practice.
