Opposition grows against housing plan below Westbury’s White Horse
Residents and local leaders voice concerns over iconic landscape
Objections are mounting against a proposed housing development on fields near Westbury’s iconic White Horse.
The planning application, submitted by Manor and Auckland Farms, seeks permission for up to 41 homes on a 2.3-hectare site off Bratton Road.
Opponents, including Westbury Town Council and South West Wiltshire MP Andrew Murrison, argue the plan could harm the setting of the White Horse and exacerbate local traffic issues.
Local councillor Boaz Barry has voiced concerns about the impact on countryside and visibility of the landmark.
Residents have also raised fears about pressure on local services and the effect on wildlife habitats.
Developers say the scheme is designed with ecological constraints in mind and promises biodiversity net gain through on-site measures and a separate habitat near Knook.
The proposal forms part of the larger site earmarked under Wiltshire Council’s emerging Local Plan.
Despite revisions to accommodate future connections with adjoining land, opposition remains strong.
The planning application is seen by critics as an encroachment on one of the town’s most recognisable landscapes.
Final decisions will be made as the public consultation period draws to a close.
