There's a warning from Wiltshire Police to never pick up items that could be ordnance.

It follows an incident on Saturday (8th April) where a member of the public picked up a potential unexploded bomb in a Hampshire beach.

They then brought it back to their home in Salisbury, before realising that it could have been dangerous.

Officers discovered it was just a piece of metal, but say what happened should serve as a warning to others.

PC Joshua Pankhurst said:

“Unexploded ordnance can be found anywhere, and they can range in size from a bullet to air-dropped bombs weighing hundreds of pounds.

“These can all cause serious injury and loss of life. Please, if you do find something, don’t be tempted to poke it around to try to identify it.

“Leave it alone and report it to us immediately on 999. A false alarm is better than an explosion.”
