Trowbridge man jailed after supermarket theft spree
John Vann sentenced to 21 weeks behind bars for multiple thefts
A Trowbridge man has been jailed for 21 weeks after admitting to shoplifting incidents at several supermarkets across the town.
John Vann, 37, of no fixed address, appeared at Salisbury Magistrates Court on 23rd January, where he pleaded guilty to 11 counts of theft.
Police reported that Vann’s thefts began on 28th December, targeting supermarkets such as Tesco Express on Eastbourne Road and Sainsburys in British Row.
On New Year’s Day, Vann was seen entering the British Row Sainsburys, concealing bottles of alcohol within his jacket.
Three further offences were committed just hours apart on 6th January, involving hundreds of pounds worth of confectionery and alcohol stolen from Sainsburys and Tesco Extra in County Way.
On 22nd January, Vann was detained after being observed on store CCTV at Tesco Extra in County Way stealing items such as an electric toothbrush and alcohol.
PC Josh Hammond said: “Vann is a prolific offender who has committed a string of thefts at supermarkets across Trowbridge in recent weeks.
“We’d like to thank the security staff at these stores whose vigilance has helped us put Vann before the courts.
“I am pleased the sentence handed out by the court reflects the seriousness of Vann’s actions. He showed a flagrant disregard for people and their property and continued to offend.
“Retail crime will always be treated seriously by Wiltshire Police and we will continue to ensure prolific offenders like Vann are put before the courts.”
In addition to his prison sentence, Vann has been ordered to pay a £154 victim surcharge.
