Anticipation building as Trowbridge Leisure Centre nears completion
It's on schedule to open later this year
Trowbridge's new £25 million leisure centre is on schedule to open later this year, according to developers.
We got a chance to have a sneak preview of the new facility, which is being built opposite County Hall, as it continues to take shape.
The centre will be home to two swimming pools, an adventure playground, a gym with over 120 stations, two exercise class studios and a community meeting room.
Construction began in April 2025, and Gert-Jan Peeters, Managing Director of contractors Pellikaan, says they're on course to open in October.
"We're on schedule, but there's still quite some work to do inside," he told us, adding that he's "not worried" about progress.
He revealed that it's not been a straightforward project: "We discovered some things which were buried on the ground. Nobody knew about it.
"We still have some externals to finish, so there's still some challenges to do. But I know for sure the team will solve it and get it over the line."
Gert-Jan said it's an exciting time for Trowbridge, saying that the new facility will be high-class. He said that when he arrived in the UK from the Netherlands 30 years ago, Council Leisure Centre facilities were "quite basic.
But this new development is a far-cry from that: "It's got everything inside. It will be a joy to come here, to swim with the externals, the landscaping, to go there, walk on your bike. It's so easy to get to and the facilities, they're top facilities," he said.
Wiltshire Council's Cabinet Member for Leisure, Cllr Mel Jacob, who represents the Trowbridge Paxcroft ward, praised the team for the work they're doing.
"We're really pleased. They have had a few things that maybe have been buried under the ground that they didn't want to find but they've kept on schedule, they're moving forward, everything's happening," she said.
Cllr Jacob added that it's been exciting to see the progress from just a few holes in the ground, to what we can see now, which she describes as a "beautiful building".
