A Trowbridge handyman has been prosecuted after taking over £2,000 from customers for home improvement jobs that were never commenced.

Michael Collins, 42, from Broad Street, Trowbridge, trading as MC's Gardening & Handyman Services, pleaded guilty to two offences of unfair commercial practices at Salisbury Magistrates' Court on 18th August.

The court fined him £300 and ordered him to pay £880 in prosecution costs, £700 in compensation, and a £120 victim surcharge, totalling £1,700.

The prosecution followed complaints from two Wiltshire residents who had paid Mr Collins for services that remained undelivered.

In one instance, a resident from Chippenham paid £700 for painting and decorating work after viewing the business online; however, no work commenced, nor was any refund provided.

Another case involved a Christian Malford resident who paid towards fencing work, including deposits and material costs, which were never ordered or begun.

Mr Collins admitted during an interview under caution that no work had been done at either location and funds were not returned.

Cllr Paul Sample, Cabinet Member for Public Protection, commented on the matter, stressing the importance of trust between consumers and traders, which was breached in these situations.

He underscored Wiltshire Council's dedication to investigating and prosecuting those engaging in unfair trading practices, advocating for consumers to use the Buy With Confidence scheme to find reputable traders audited by Trading Standards.
