Tributes have been paid to former Wiltshire county councillor Caroline Pym MBE, who has died aged 95 after a lifetime of public service in Malmesbury.
Mrs Pym died peacefully at home on the night of Wednesday, October 7, her family announced.
She had suffered a stroke in January and had since been supported by carers, her family and local friends.
Her death was marked at a full meeting of Wiltshire Council on Tuesday, October 20.
Mrs Pym served for eight years as a Wiltshire county councillor, having previously been a magistrate at the former courts in Malmesbury.
Her contribution to the town extended well beyond local politics.
She served as a governor of Malmesbury’s secondary and primary schools and, while chairman, supported their amalgamation.
Mrs Pym also ran a minibus for disabled people through Malmesbury and District Community Transport and helped establish a youth support scheme offering confidential advice.
A longstanding member of the Civic Trust with a keen interest in conservation, she led a fundraising drive which raised £30,000 in three months to restore floodlighting at Malmesbury Abbey.
Her contribution was recognised in 2011 when she was appointed MBE for services to the community of Malmesbury.
Mrs Pym’s family described hers as a “rich and varied life” which they would celebrate in due course.
She was also the mother of BBC journalist and health correspondent Hugh Pym, who was born in Malmesbury.
