Tributes have been paid to an 88-year-old woman from Fordingbridge who was killed by a cow in the New Forest last month.

Pam Barnwell was walking her dog near Roger Penny Way in Godshill on 21st October when she was fatally injured.

She was rushed to hospital where she died.

Mrs Barnwell worked at Ringwood solicitors Meesons & Spurlings for over 20 years, and the firm has paid tribute to her.

Director Edward Holmes said:

“Pam was diminutive in stature but huge in personality."

The 88-year-old had been working part-time as an archivist, with Mr Holmes saying she enjoyed her job, adding that Pam had no intention of retiring.

Mr Holmes said: “She was loved by both old and young throughout the company and we are all devastated by her loss in such tragic circumstances while undertaking her daily walk in the New Forest with her beloved dog Rosie.

“Rest in peace Pam, we miss you.”

The inquest into Mrs Barnwell's death was opened on 29th October by coroner Nicholas Walker.

Mr Walker said the preliminary cause of death was pelvic haemorrhage and polytrauma, with the inquest set to heard on 15th September 2025.

Mrs Barnwell's death has led to calls for increased safety in the New Forest area, where animals roam freely across roads and grassland.

Hampshire County Council said:

"While the county council would install highways related signage, primarily intended for drivers, responsibility for livestock, on land that a right of way crosses, and any associated required signs, would rest with the owners of the animals."
