A Tidworth man has been jailed for seven and a half years after being found guilty of raping a woman following a night out.

Gary Conibear, 33, of Churchill Close, was convicted at Winchester Crown Court of attacking the woman in June 2022 after the pair had been drinking and playing pool with friends.

He offered to walk her home, and both later fell asleep fully clothed — but the victim woke to find Conibear raping her.

On Monday 6 October, he was sentenced to 90 months in prison and given an indefinite restraining order preventing any contact with the victim.

In a powerful statement read to the court, the survivor said the attack had “broken and reshaped” her life, adding:

“There is no sentence long enough to give me back the peace that was stolen from me — but I’m still standing, scarred but not silenced.”

Detective Constable Sue Elway praised the woman’s bravery, saying she’d shown “incredible strength” through two trials after the first ended in a hung jury.
