Police are thanking a concerned member of the public following the arrest of a suspected drink driver in Chippenham yesterday evening.

At 7.20pm yesterday, we received a call from a member of the public reporting their concerns over a blue Mercedes in Chippenham which was being driven in an erratic manner, drifting into the opposite lane and speeding.

The vehicle was seen turning into the Halfords car park in Foundry Lane, where it parked across two bays.

The driver, a 38-year-old man, was then seen stumbling towards Tesco.

When officers arrived, the driver was identified at the scene. He was then spoken to by officers, during which he was unsteady on his feet and smelled of alcohol.

He refused to provide a specimen for analysis at the roadside, and was arrested on suspicion of failing to provide.

He was then further arrested for driving without a license and without insurance.

He remains in custody for questioning.

Neighbourhood Sergeant Jamie Ball said: “Thanks to a concerned member of the public, we were able to arrest the suspect before he got back behind the wheel of his car.

“As we have repeatedly said, drink driving is one of the fatal five offences. Alcohol slows your reactions significantly and impairs your judgement. There is no excuse for it.”
