Farm fires cost the South West £18.2 million in 2025, according to NFU Mutual's latest Farm Fires Report, marking a 20% decrease from the previous year amidst record temperatures.

Despite the decline, the South West remains one of the most affected regions. Across the UK, the cost increased by 18% to an estimated £118 million mainly due to fires involving growing crops, buildings, and farm equipment.

Agricultural vehicles operate at very high temperatures, and after two hot dry summers a spark can very quickly become a dangerous fire.

Arson, lightning strikes and electrical faults were among the primary causes for fires.

High temperatures and sunshine hours in 2025 heightened fire risks, affecting farmers in the UK, with tractor fires alone costing £16.1 million and combine harvester fires adding an extra £4.8 million.

NFU Mutual Regional Manager, Karen Taylor, highlighted the ongoing threat faced by farmers, stating, “The risk of uncontrollable blazes has never been higher," calling for stronger policies to protect rural businesses."
