A serving Wiltshire police officer has pleaded guilty to drink driving while off duty.

PC Ted Andrews, 19, from Swindon, admitted the charge at Oxford Magistrates Court today (4th November), following an incident that occurred on the Magic Roundabout in Swindon on 20th September.

At around 11.15pm on 20th September, officers on patrol in Swindon found a broken-down white Skoda on the Magic Roundabout.

Wiltshire Police said the Skoda, driven by PC Andrews, is thought to have collided with roadside furniture on the roundabout.

PC Andrews was asked to provide a breath sample after attending officers suspected he had been drinking.

Police said Andrews provided a positive sample and was arrested, and later charged with drink driving.

After pleading guilty to drink driving Andrews was disqualified from driving for 16 months and fined £250.

PC Andrews, who is still in his probationary period, was suspended from duty on 22nd September immediately after the incident.

An accelerated misconduct process will now take place, Wiltshire Police confirmed.

Deputy Chief Constable Mark Cooper said: “There is no excuse for PC Andrews’ actions on that night, which put both himself and other road users at risk.

“Drink driving can and does result in deaths on our roads and we have run numerous campaigns and road operations over the years highlighting this fact.

“PC Andrews’ actions undermine this work and the hard work of the overwhelming majority of officers who work tirelessly to protect and serve the people of Wiltshire.

“As a serving police officer, he should have known better and it is fortunate the consequences of his actions weren’t worse.

“Any criminal conviction of a serving police officer undermines the public confidence in policing. PC Andrews will now face accelerated internal disciplinary proceedings.”
