Salisbury teacher joins charity walk after twice battling breast cancer
Jo Argyle aims to raise money for Salisbury District Hospital's Breast Unit
A maths teacher from Salisbury who has twice beaten cancer is among 1,500 people now signed up for the Stars Appeal's biggest event of the year.
Jo Argyle, the Head of Maths at South Wilts Grammar School, is taking part in Walk for Wards to express her gratitude to the Breast Unit team at Salisbury District Hospital.
The event, which helps support numerous aspects of hospital activity, will take place on 5th July 2025 at Wilton House, featuring walking options ranging from 3k to 15k.
Participants can fundraise for their chosen ward or department, including the Breast Unit, which aims to purchase a £300,000 mammogram machine.
Jo's Journey with Breast Cancer
Jo was first diagnosed with breast cancer in February 2016 at the age of 41.
Following a scan that revealed five tumours, she underwent a mastectomy and six rounds of chemotherapy, completing her treatment by August 2016.
In April of last year, Jo discovered another lump requiring further treatment at the Stars Appeal Breast Unit at Salisbury Hospital, which opened in 2017.
After surgery to remove the cancer and radiotherapy treatment in June 2025, Jo continues to attend regular check-ups and annual mammograms.
Stars Appeal Breast Unit Support
Reflecting on her experiences, Jo highlighted the comfort and care she received at the dedicated Breast Unit.
"In 2016, the first time I was diagnosed, it was horrendous having to go to different departments for your scans and appointments," Jo said.
On the new Breast Unit, she said, "The Breast Care nurses run the unit like their home. I feel completely at ease there. The unit feels less like a hospital."
She praised the thoughtful provisions like the shopping-type bag for clothing, which contribute to the unit's welcoming atmosphere.
