The Catering Team at Salisbury NHS Foundation Trust has received national acclaim for transforming hospital catering services, earning the Digital Innovation Award at the Healthcare Estates & Facilities Management Association (HEFMA) Awards.

Celebrated for their introduction of a fully-digital Electronic Meal Ordering (EMO) system across all inpatient wards, the team has replaced traditional paper menus with real-time bedside ordering.

This digitisation significantly enhances patient safety through precise allergen and dietary coding while improving choice and overall experience for patients.

The award underscores the Trust’s dedication to integrating patient-centred care, digital innovation, and sustainability.

Collaborating closely with ward teams, the Catering Team has also leveraged carbon analysis technology to redesign menus, achieving a 62% reduction in the carbon footprint of patient meals and a 19% reduction in food waste.

Paul Straughair, Catering Manager at Salisbury NHS Foundation Trust, expressed pride in the team's achievements.

He said: “I’m incredibly proud of what the Team has achieved. This award reflects the hard work, collaboration and dedication across multiple teams to improve patient experience while making a real difference to sustainability. It’s fantastic to see our work recognised on a national stage."
