Green Lane improvement works to begin in Salisbury next week
Construction starts on the 18th May along Green Lane
Wiltshire Council will begin construction work next week to enhance Green Lane in Salisbury, specifically between Roman Road and Pearce Way.
These improvements are set to benefit pedestrians, cyclists, and horse riders, making the path easier and safer to use all year round.
The project aims to boost safety at road crossings and encourage more people to travel by foot, bike, or horseback in their daily activities.
Planned upgrades
The initiative will include improvements to the surface of Green Lane to enhance comfort and accessibility for walkers, cyclists, and horse riders.
Additionally, new street lighting will improve safety, and a new parallel crossing on Pearce Way will allow pedestrians and cyclists to cross together on a raised platform.
Traffic calming measures will be introduced on Roman Road to slow down vehicles and improve safety at crossings.
Cllr Martin Smith, Cabinet Member for Highways, said: "This scheme will make a real difference for people who use Green Lane regularly and for anyone who wants to walk, cycle or ride more as part of their everyday journeys. By improving safety and access, we're helping to make active travel a realistic and attractive choice.
Projects like this support the ambitions set out in Our Wiltshire Plan, by promoting low-carbon travel and improving road safety as part of a greener Wiltshire where everyone can travel confidently and sustainably."
The scheme is part of the Salisbury Local Cycling and Walking Infrastructure Plan and is funded through a combination of Active Travel England grant and developer contributions.
Phases and construction timeline
Construction will start on 18th May and is anticipated to continue until October.
To minimise disruption, the work will be carried out in four main phases, each focusing on different sections of Green Lane or the surrounding roads.
Advance warning signs will be installed prior to the commencement of works, and signed diversion routes will be available where closures are required.
Efforts will be made to maintain access for residents, pedestrians, and cyclists throughout the construction period.
Phase 1 will see the temporary closure of the Green Lane bridleway for surface preparation and safety works.
Phase 2 will involve improvement works on sections of Green Lane away from main road junctions.
Phase 3 will include the installation of traffic calming measures on Roman Road, with temporary traffic management in place.
Phase 4 will see work on Pearce Way to install the new parallel crossing, which could require temporary road closures or restrictions.
