Salisbury Foodbank to open during festive period for emergency support
Foodbank available to support those in emergency situations between Christmas and New Year
Salisbury Foodbank is set to open its doors for limited hours during the festive period to provide emergency food support for those in need between Christmas and New Year.
Maria Stevenson, Foodbank Manager, explained the decision, acknowledging the additional challenges the holidays can bring for people facing financial difficulties.
“As a general rule, our food bank centres are closed. However, I felt it was very wrong for us not to be available for people who really need that emergency support between Christmas and New Year,” she said.
The foodbank’s warehouse, located on Ashfield Road, will be open on the 29th, 30th, and 31st December from 12:00 to 2:00, with anyone in a genuine emergency situation urged to reach out during these times.
Defining an emergency
Maria likened a food emergency to the criteria for attending A&E.
She explained that emergencies are typically unexpected and leave individuals or families without food or the means to provide for themselves.
Examples include sudden financial strain caused by an unforeseen event, such as paying for unexpected car repairs after an accident, or a broken appliance used to prepare meals.
Stevenson said, “If you don’t have food in your cupboards and you can’t support yourself or your family, come and seek support from your local food bank. We're here to help you.”
Referral agencies and food bank contact
Stevenson noted that many referral agencies are closed during the holiday period, making it difficult for people to obtain the usual referrals for foodbank services.
However, those who find themselves in emergency situations can still call Salisbury Foodbank or visit the Ashfield Road warehouse between the specified hours without a referral.
The foodbank team will assist anyone in urgent need of their support during these sessions.
