Salisbury Charter Fair is returning to the city centre this October, with four days of rides, food, games and entertainment.

The event has been held for almost 800 years. Its history dates back to 1227, when King Henry the Third gave the Bishop of Salisbury permission to hold a fair on the third Monday in October.

This year, the fair runs from Sunday, 18 October until Wednesday, 21 October. It begins with the traditional civic parade through Salisbury Market Place on Sunday afternoon, before the fair opens until 9pm that evening.

It will then be open from 11am until 10pm from Monday to Wednesday.

Classic attractions including the carousel, dodgems and waltzer will be joined by bigger rides such as Super Star and Star Flyer. Visitors can also expect hook-a-duck, hoopla, a mini arcade, sweet treats and street food.

Salisbury Charter Market will not take place on Tuesday, 20 October because of the fair.

The city will mark 800 years since that charter in 2027, with the Charter Fair expected to form part of a wider programme of anniversary celebrations.
