Safety improvements to reduce traffic and enhance pedestrian access
Bradford on Avon town council supports measures for safer streets
Safety enhancements are underway for Silver Street in Bradford on Avon following a unanimous vote by the town council to address traffic concerns and pedestrian access.
The decision was made during a full council meeting held on 1st September, with Wiltshire Council Highways presenting plans for wider pavements, courtesy crossings, and an improved route from The Shambles to Kingston Road.
Proposals involve restricting uphill vehicle movement during 7am to 7pm for safer pedestrian space, maintaining downhill flow without restrictions. Effective signage is planned to instruct road users clearly.
One-way downhill movement during busy hours aims to decrease close proximity of vehicles to footpaths and street-front properties, enhancing pedestrian comfort and safety.
Wiltshire Council noted that while maintaining essential bus routes, traffic reduction fosters better conditions for pedestrians and businesses, emphasising two-way traffic during quieter periods.
The plan involves an experimental traffic regulation order lasting up to 18 months, enabling a trial phase to monitor outcomes, gathering data on benefits and potential issues.
Further steps include designing comprehensive improvements for Silver Street, securing funding, and undertaking a prerequisite air quality assessment.
