A shop in Royal Wootton Bassett has been ordered to close for three months following the discovery of illegal activities by Wiltshire Council's Trading Standards service.

Royal Mini Market, situated at 129 High Street, received a closure order under the Anti-Social Behaviour, Crime and Policing Act 2014.

Swindon Magistrates' Court granted the order on 15th April due to repeated violations related to the sale of illicit tobacco and vapes.

Only specified residents and authorised individuals can now enter the premises; anyone else could face imprisonment or a fine.

Investigations and Enforcement

Since its opening in November 2024, Royal Mini Market has been subject to enforcement action for illegal sales.

In November 2024, the shop sold a vape to a minor during a test purchase operation, followed by the sale of counterfeit cigarettes the next month.

Despite warnings, illegal activities continued, leading to a joint operation in February 2026 with Trading Standards officers and Wiltshire Police.

Officers seized over 150 non-compliant vapes and 240 tobacco products from a hidden compartment.

Official Responses and Community Impact

Cllr Paul Sample, Cabinet Member for Public Protection, commented on the closure:

“This order reflects the seriousness of the criminal activity at these premises and the clear disregard shown for the law," Sample said.

Concerns over public safety risks associated with counterfeit tobacco, including fire hazards and community harm, were also highlighted.

Inspector Scott Anger praised community intelligence that led to enforcement actions against the business.

He emphasised the importance of community reporting in tackling sales linked to organised crime.

Reporting and Community Safety

The public is urged to report any information concerning illegal vape or tobacco sales to Trading Standards at [email protected] or anonymously at www.tssw.org.uk.

Wiltshire Council remains committed to disrupting criminal activities and safeguarding communities.
