Queen Camilla has paid a visit to Wiltshire Museum.

Her Majesty is royal patron of the Wiltshire Museum in Devizes, which recently visited the venue to mark a significant milestone in the museum's history.

Her visit was a celebration of its successful funding award, which will support the redevelopment of Assize Court—a derelict historic building that is set to become the museum's new home.

David Dawson, Director of the Wiltshire Museum, reflected on the importance of the royal visit: "It was absolutely fantastic to welcome her to the museum and introduce her to our guests. Her support for the redevelopment of Assize Court means a great deal to us."

Celebrating a new chapter

The Assize Court project involves rescuing a building that has been on Historic England’s Heritage Risk Register for nearly 20 years.

Described as a "mini version of the British Museum," the building will be transformed into a central hub for tourism and heritage in Wiltshire.

"She thinks the plans are absolutely fantastic,” David said. “It’s wonderful news for the museum and for Wiltshire as a whole."

A day to remember

During her visit, Queen Camilla met staff and volunteers and viewed key objects from the museum's collection. She also spoke to supporters, funders, and members, as well as engaging with a local community art group involved in a creative project.

"What was absolutely wonderful is that she spoke to everyone in the building," David said. "She even joined the community group for a selfie, which everyone loved and made for a great memory."

A personal touch

Outside the museum, Queen Camilla extended her kindness by taking time to meet local onlookers, including a family watching from nearby. She greeted the children, demonstrating her generous and approachable nature.

"She didn’t need to do that, but it just shows how kind and generous she was," David said. "It was such a privilege and a joy to have her visit the museum."

The visit underlines the importance of royal involvement in community projects like Assize Court, adding recognition and momentum to initiatives.
