Authorities have issued a warning about the risks associated with swimming at Keevil’s Weir, near Castlefields Park in Calne, following a recent surge in visitors during warm weather.

An estimated 20 to 30 people, predominantly children and older youths, were reportedly swimming and jumping into the water at the location yesterday, prompting police attendance.

PCSO Mark Cook highlighted the dangers of swimming at the weir, citing strong undercurrents and submerged objects as significant hazards.

He also expressed concerns about the steep riverbanks and the potential for cold water shock, noting that despite the heatwave, the water remains cold.

“Although we have thankfully only recently received a small number of reports of incidents locally, other areas of the country have unfortunately seen tragedies involving both children and adults swimming in open water," Cook said.

Several years ago, lifesaving equipment was installed at the site for emergency use, but there are concerns about the response time of emergency services in isolated areas.

With an increase in visitors expected during the school holidays, police plan to boost patrols at Keevil’s Weir and other local waterways.

Visitors are urged to follow safety signs, inform guardians of their whereabouts, and take rubbish home when leaving.
