A popular children's event is returning to Stonehenge for the upcoming half term week, where youngsters will be able to build their own adventure playground.

Playhenge will allow children to use their imagination to create their own play area, using real hammers, saws and nails.

English Heritage's Charlie Hall said: "We're encouraging kids to get creative in a safe sort of outdoor environment, working together and learning practical hands-on skills."

She added that the hands-on nature of the activity is key to the development of children, teaching them important lessons on how to be safe with equipment and tools.

"It's about allowing a safe environment for children to be as creative as possible and giving kids the opportunity to work with these tools under supervision, of course, to build and get creative and making their own adventure playground," she said, adding: "I would have loved to have done that as a child."

The activity is supported by non-profit CIC, Woodland Tribe, who promote adventure playground movement across the UK.

It has echoes of the ancient site's own history, with innovation and community spirit at the heart of creating something for everyone to enjoy.

The activity will also be position next to the ongoing project where a Neolithic Hall is being built by volunteers with tools from the age, meaning a direct contrast between the old and the new will be visible.

Once the playground is built, the children will be given a chance to play on it, once it has been thoroughly checked by experts to ensure it's structurally safe.

The event runs from Saturday 23rd May to Friday 29th May, between 10.30am and 5.30pm. It's included in the admission price for visitors to the site and free for English Heritage members.
