Help for Heroes says we must do better before asking more of service personnel
A veterans charity in Wiltshire says improvements need to be made to how service personnel are supported when they leave the Armed Forces before we start asking for more from those currently serving.
Downton-based Help for Heroes has unveiled a new plan for supporting veterans in the UK, and is calling for us to back the People's Promise.
The promise is a way for us to show members of the Armed Forces community, and decision makers, that we care.
The call comes during Armed Forces week, where the public is encouraged to ensure they're aware of the service and sacrifice military personnel have made, and continue to make, to protect our freedoms.
Army Veteran, and Help for Heroes Peer Support Trainer, Spencer Bull, said it's about ensuring former military people are given the help they deserve.
"It's to make sure that the nation supports people after service, both veterans and families," he said. "There are four elements to it. There's healthcare on transition out of military, financial security, a consistent support across the country and a society that fulfils its duty, as we would say."

Spencer was medically discharged after being diagnosed with multiple sclerosis in 2025, having served for 29 years.
While many veterans adjust to civilian life well, there are some who face significant challenges, especially if they've been medically discharged.
"There are a number of people who struggle and any support that can be given to them is really appreciated. And that's what we're trying to do is to make sure that it's fair, consistent and accessible for all veterans and their families when they transition out of the military," Spencer said.
He stressed the need for continued collaboration between charities and services across the nation to ensure individuals are signposted to the right support to ensure they can access what they need.
