A new community of mobile homes for older people looking to downsize will be built in north Wiltshire, after planners gave the scheme the go-ahead.

Nineteen mobile homes will be situated on a 1.6 acres adjoining near MOD Lyneham, and a new village shop and café will be built.

Sale of the mobile homes will be ‘age restricted’ – and Wiltshire Council planning officers said the provision would reduce the strain on housing supply by allowing older people to downsize.

They asked councillors to permit planning permission.

The plans came before members of Wiltshire Council’s northern area planning committee last week.

The committee heard there are already existing mobile home parks at Bungalow Park and Church Park in Bradenstoke, and Lillybrook and Maguire’s Park Homes in nearby Lyneham.

The new mobile home park would be adjacent to a massive solar farm that sits on MOD land.

There were originally plans for 50 mobile homes at the new park, but this was scaled back following public consultation

A 50 metre square shop and a site office will be built as part of the development. The site entrance is immediately opposite a bus stop offering links to Lyneham, Royal Wootton Bassett, and Swindon.

Individual parking spaces for each plot will be provided, along with 10 visitor spaces.

The proposal faced objections from Lyneham & Bradenstoke Parish Council due to the impact to the character of the village, the lack of infrastructure and transport links, the strain on services, and traffic issues.

Sixty five residents also submitted objections to the plans.
