Motorist appears in court accused of causing deaths of three Vespa riders
70-year-old faces court over deaths after collision on the A36
A motorist has appeared in court charged with causing the deaths of three Vespa riders by dangerous driving.
Hugh Campion, 70, was summonsed to Salisbury Magistrates’ Court following a collision on the A36 at Knook, Wiltshire, on May 31 last year.
A Toyota Prius driven by Campion is alleged to have collided with three Vespas travelling in the opposite direction.
Robert Best, 62, died at the scene, while Marie Jones, 64, and Timothy Davies, 62, died in hospital.
Campion, of Upton Scudamore, Wiltshire, is also accused of a fourth charge, that of causing serious injury to Gary Jones by dangerous driving.
The defendant spoke only to confirm his name, date of birth and address during a brief hearing before magistrates.
He did not enter any pleas to the three counts of causing death by dangerous driving, and one count of causing serious injury by dangerous driving.
Magistrates sent the case to Salisbury Crown Court for a plea and case management hearing on September 16.
Campion was released on unconditional bail.
