MOD Lyneham approved for over 3,500 new solar panels
Flooding concerns addressed in Wiltshire Council decision
Wiltshire Council has granted approval for the installation of over 3,500 new solar panels at MOD Lyneham in North Wiltshire, addressing initial concerns about flooding in the area.
The Secretary of State for Defence sought permission for 3,582 solar panels at the military base, which already hosts 269,000 panels.
The MOD's application aims to power a new technical training school and associated accommodation block currently under construction within Lyneham.
Covering a total site area of 3.6 hectares, the solar array will occupy 2.5 hectares, with the closest point just 50 metres from the village of Bradenstoke and visible to some residents.
Panels will be mounted at a maximum height of 2.6 metres (8.5 feet) from the ground.
Lyneham and Bradenstoke Parish Council raised no objections, stipulating that sufficient drainage measures to prevent flooding must be enforced.
Concerns were echoed by Wiltshire Council's drainage officer, who highlighted the need for surface water flooding mitigation.
In response, the MOD submitted a drainage strategy to address the concerns raised by local authorities.
