A Melksham shoplifter's been jailed and banned from entering shops in five Wiltshire towns.

4\6 year old Ian Gadd, from Semington Road, has been given a 40 week sentence by Swindon Magistrates Court.

He'd been found guilty of two counts of theft and three counts of attempted theft.

A Criminal Behaviour Order (CBO) has also been secured, banning Gadd from a number of shops in Melksham, Westbury, Trowbridge, Bradford on Avon and Devizes.

Sergeant Charly Chilton from Wiltshire Police said:

"In the last six months we have secured CBOs for six shoplifting offenders. Retail crime remains a significant concern to our businesses across Wiltshire – particularly in relation to shoplifting.

"My Neighbourhood Policing Team are working closely with our retail communities as we know this type of crime has a huge affect on them, both financially and mentally.

"As well as high visibility patrols we're also carrying out plain clothed operations.

"I'd urge retailers to sign up to Shop Watch and Business Watch as these schemes are there to help support and protect you, and work alongside other businesses."

Anyone found to be breaking a CBO can be sentenced for up to five years in prison.
