A man, who led police on a high speed pursuit around residential streets in Chippenham, has been jailed.

Curtis Harrison, 27, of Fullers Way, Odd Down, failed to stop his Ford Focus for officers during the evening of September 13 and instead drove at high speeds around the town before making off on foot.

He appeared at Swindon Crown Court today (1/5) and pleaded guilty to dangerous driving, failing to stop, driving otherwise in accordance with a licence and no insurance and was sentenced to 14 months imprisonment.

At approximately 9.15pm on the day in question, officers sighted the vehicle being driven along Hungerdown Lane with faulty number plates. The vehicle was also found to have no insurance. When officers activated their blue lights in an attempt to stop the vehicle, the driver made off and was pursued up and down Hungerdown Lane where he drove in excess of 90mph in a 30mph area and drove through barriers and across grass playing fields in Redlands.

He eventually came to a stop after crashing into a vehicle in Manor Road and making off on foot. It was only then that officers found a 10-year-old child in the back of the vehicle and a woman in the front of the vehicle. Harrison was later identified and interviewed at Melksham Police Station.

PC Paul Davis said: “Harrison showed a total disregard for other members of the public and those within the vehicle, including a young child. He drove in excess of 90mph in a 30mph limit, mounting pavements and driving over grass areas within housing estates where children often play or hang out. It is only by sheer fortune, not judgement, that his reckless actions did not result in serious injury or loss of life. It’s so disappointing seeing the lengths some people will go to evade police – putting others at real serious risk of harm.”

Harrison was also given a two year and seven month driving disqualification.
