Devizes Lloyds Bank to shut today with plans to strip cash machines
Landmark branch closes today with plans already in action
Lloyds Bank has received the green light to remove its cash machines and branding from its historic location in Devizes as the branch prepares to close today.
Wiltshire Council granted listed building consent for the changes on Monday, allowing the removal of redundant signs and ATMs from the Grade II-listed Market Place branch, which dates back to 1892.
Plans include filling the opening left by the external ATM with stonework that complements the building's historic façade, carried out to ensure the integrity of the conservation area.
It's also planned for the building to be decommissioned, leaving only the letterplate and night safe in place.
The council determined that removing modern fixtures could have a "modest enhancement" effect, though it acknowledged the branch’s closure would slightly diminish the site’s significance.
Devizes has witnessed the closure of six bank branches over recent years, with Lloyds joining others that have cited the constant shift toward digital transactions as a reason for shutting traditional counters.
HSBC will remain as the town's sole conventional bank branch, with Nationwide Building Society and a Yorkshire Building Society agency still offering in-person services.
