An investigation is underway after a goose was found with dead with a wound consistent with being "shot" at a lake in Royal Wootton Bassett.

Royal Wootton Bassett Town Council said in a post on social media that the goose was found by a resident at Jubilee Lake Nature Reserve this morning (19th May) and it had "a single puncture wound consistent with being shot."

The authority added that it is working with the RSPCA and has referred the matter to the police with CCTV footage from around the lake is being reviewed.

A spokesperson for the council said: "We are seeking urgent guidance from the RSPCA, particularly as there may be goslings of the bird.

"The matter has also been reported to the police, and CCTV footage from around the lake is now being reviewed.

"It is against the law to intentionally kill, injure, or take wild birds, unless carried out under a licence. Offences can carry a prison sentence of up to six months.

"This is a sickening and completely unacceptable act of violence, wildlife should be safe in our community, and we share the shock and anger that many residents will be feeling today."
