Free Blue Badge parking poised to return to Wiltshire Council car parks
The Council Cabinet has agreed to reintroduce the provision, subject to Full Council approval
Wiltshire Council's Cabinet has agreed to reintroduce free parking for Blue Badge holders at Council-run car parks.
The provision ended in 2022, although Blue Badge holders are currently given a one-hour grace period once their paid parking ticket has expired.
Since 2022, on-street free parking has remained free for Blue Badge holders.
The decision still needs to be approved by Full Council later this month, with members voting specifically on the policy position, as the original decision to introduce charging for Blue Badge holders was part of 2022's Budget and Policy Framework.
Cllr Martin Smith, Cabinet Member for Highways, said: "I'm very pleased that Cabinet has agreed to reinstate free parking for Blue Badge holders in Wiltshire Council car parks.
"There are more than 30,000 Blue Badge holders in Wiltshire. Eligibility is based on a range of criteria, including being unable to walk more than 50 metres, being registered blind, receiving a war pensioner's mobility supplement, or having a permanent and substantial disability.
"Many Blue Badge holders do not drive or own a vehicle themselves, and often rely on family, friends, or carers for transport. There is also a strong correlation between Blue Badge holders and lower levels of income.
"This policy promotes fairness, independence and inclusion, while helping to improve the lives of people with disabilities. I hope Full Council will back this move to make Wiltshire a more equitable and accessible place for everyone."
All Blue Badge holders must continue to clearly display their badge when using designated bays.
