Wiltshire Council issues penalty for breach of animal welfare legislation
A farmer in Trowbridge has been issued a £4,025 Animal Penalty Notice after transporting a cow unfit for travel to a Bristol abattoir.
Wiltshire Council's Animal Health and Welfare team investigated the incident after the cow arrived at the abattoir on 7th April.
The Official Veterinarian noted significant swelling and bleeding in the animal’s right forelimb upon arrival, determining it unfit for transport, which prompted a referral to Wiltshire Council.
Despite receiving veterinary advice the day prior to euthanise the cow due to its severe injury, the farmer proceeded with transporting the animal.
Consequently, a £4,025 penalty was imposed, which can be halved if paid within 14 days.
The farm manager responsible for transport, who did not benefit financially, received a formal caution.

Cllr Paul Sample, Cabinet Member for Public Protection, highlighted the seriousness of ensuring animal welfare during transport:
"The welfare of animals during transport is a matter that must be taken seriously."
Ignoring veterinary advice for euthanasia before transport resulted in enforcement action, underscoring the gravity of adhering to animal welfare legislation.
