Efforts to establish a rail station for Devizes are gaining momentum, with completion targeted for 2032, according to Richard Oliver, a member of the town council leading the initiative.

A special task group has been set up to focus on the rail station project, with consultants brought in to provide expertise. Oliver explained that the group aims to meet the transport needs of Devizes residents and businesses by improving local connectivity.

"We’re looking to work alongside consultants, not instead of them," Oliver said. "The idea is to bring in expertise, both from the steering committee and externally, to address community needs and concerns."

The scheme is reliant on the Westbury Platform 0 project, for which a study is due to be published in March.

Understanding Devizes' transportation needs

Oliver identified several advantages of a rail station, including improved commuting routes to major cities such as London, Bristol, Salisbury, and Birmingham.

He highlighted that it could also benefit local education, tourism, and businesses by reducing dependence on road travel, which is currently the town's primary mode of transport.

A key goal for the group is engaging stakeholders, including residents living near the proposed site and those closer to alternative stations, to make sure the project meets identified needs.

Challenges of funding and infrastructure

While Oliver acknowledged the project’s benefits, he also stressed the financial challenges involved.

A rail station involves "sheer costs of planning, land acquisition, rail infrastructure, and rolling stock," making it a part of a larger business case rather than a standalone build, he explained.

He added that while a building and a car park can be costed, the total cost isn't currently on anyone's radar.

"What we're looking at is a business case that involves the station as part of a much, much larger project," he said.

Community input vital to the planning process

Community involvement is another critical element of the project. According to Oliver, residents will be consulted through surveys and face-to-face opportunities as part of updating the Devizes Area Network Development Plan.

“There will be plenty of chances for people to have their say on this,” Oliver said, encouraging locals to offer their input.

The completion date for Devizes rail station is anticipated for 2032, but Oliver noted that the timeline is dependent on collaboration among various stakeholders, councils, and other organisations involved in large-scale transport projects.

The task group remains optimistic but encourages patience as plans take shape.
