Drug driving on the rise in Wiltshire
Drug driving offences were higher than drink driving across the UK in 2025 for the first time
The number of people being caught drug driving in Wiltshire is on the rise.
According to Police figures, in 2025, 483 people were caught drug driving, a near 17% rise from 2024's 413.
It reflects a national trend, which is leading to a warning from charity, IAM RoadSmart, with new data revealing more than 30,000 people were caught driving whilst under the influence of drugs in 2025, as they surpassed drink driving figures for the first time.
It's a rise of almost a third over the last three years, leading to the charity branding it a “drug-driving epidemic”.
The Department for Transport says the data is extremely worrying.
A DfT spokesperson said: “These figures are deeply concerning. Drug-driving is reckless, dangerous and ruins lives.
“Our first road safety strategy in a decade has consulted on new powers to suspend driving licences for suspected drug-drivers.
“We’re also modernising how we tackle drug-driving by exploring new forensic testing methods, including saliva or sweat samples, to ensure those who endanger lives on our roads face swift consequences.”
