A drink and drug driver who crashed his car while almost three times the legal alcohol limit has been banned from driving for nearly four years.

On 11 December last year, Lee Rawlings, 36, previously of Moyne Close, Devizes, was driving south on the A350 in Melksham when he collided with the Farmers Roundabout, striking a tree.

Witnesses reported seeing him slumped in the driver’s seat, and drug paraphernalia was seen in and around the driver’s side of Rawlings’ Volkswagen Golf.

He was taken to hospital, where the hospital drink/drug drive procedure was completed.

His alcohol level for urine was found to be 317mg per 100ml, almost triple the 117 limit. He was also found to have a number of drugs in his system, including cocaine and morphine.

He was subsequently charged and pleaded guilty to drink and drug driving, plus failing to answer bail.

In a hearing at Salisbury Magistrates’ Court on Friday (12/09), he was disqualified from driving for three years and eight months.

He was also given an 18 month community order including 15 rehabilitation activity requirement days.

Roads Policing Sgt Ayres said: “Rawlings’ actions that day could have had far more significant consequences.

“Despite drinking heavily and consuming a concoction of drugs, Rawlings still chose to get behind the wheel, putting his own life and others at risk.

“As we have said many times, drink and drug driving are two of the leading contributors to deaths on our roads and we will continue to relentlessly target those who break these laws.”
